At the turn of the millennium, nostalgia for the past is very much in evidence, and intellectuals in particular are prone to reflection. This [nostalgia and reflection] are the source of Wei Rong’s art. Epic tragedies and themes of disaster are more easily expressed on the silver screen: Wei Rong’s subjects derive from the homely environments of the common people and gatherings of the intelligentsia. But it is just through such seemingly unspectacular and ordinary channels that ancient culture is transmitted. In her most recent works, Wei Rong’s combines old photographs and new imagery to express slightly more complex themes than were evident in her more purely photo-realist work of the past: yet it is not so complex as to confound the viewer. A brief biography of the artist is included. With a foreword by Lawrence Wu Erlu.
