Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Yang Fudong: Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest', held from March to September 2009, and the companion exhibition 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove', held from March to April 2009, at Asia Society and Museum in New York. Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest is a five-part film that offers a glimpse into the contradictions and uncertainties facing urban youth in contemporary Chinese society. It alludes to the story of the Seven Sages, a group of third-century CE Chinese men who left government service to lead reclusive lives, engaging in Daoist-inspired discussions, music, poetry, and heavy drinking.

With plot summary and commentary by Miwako Tezuka, artist interview by Melissa Chiu, and contributions by Adriana Poser and Daisy Yiyou Wang. Includes film stills and suggestions for further reading.
