Asia Art Archive and Jaime Ruíz Martínez host a roundtable discussion as part of his Artist-Educator Residency, engaging art education and community practitioners in Hong Kong.

Roundtable Discussion
10:30am–1pm

How can a community of individuals with an interest in art be established and sustained over time? What modes of collective knowledge exchange can be employed? Art educators, community facilitators, and cultural practitioners gather to discuss building art communities in various institutions and organisations, and how experimenting with different infrastructures and resources can inspire new models of knowledge sharing.

Ruíz will examine practices of communality in his hometown of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, and provide insights on the pillars that underpin its development, in order to begin a conversation around how these strategies can be shared in the context of Hong Kong.

The roundtable will delve into ideas of exchange, reciprocity, and sharing, as well as how modern and colonial histories have influenced our perspectives on education.

Collective Diagrammatic Drawing Workshop
2–4pm

In this workshop, Ruíz will showcase examples of diagrammatic drawing based on the tension between arborescent and rhizomatic thinking. Participants will learn how to use diagrams to build networks of conceptual intimacy and shared knowledge through hands-on exercises and group discussions. Finally, they will develop collectively-authored diagrams borrowing concepts from actor-network theory and radical reciprocity.

The roundtable is by invitation only. For art education organisations or practitioners interested in participating, please contact Carol Choi at carol@aaa.org.hk by Wednesday, 31 May 2023.

Jaime Ruíz Martínez is an artist-educator with training in design, visual art, and contemporary thought. His interests revolve around the intersections between different binary paradigms, such as rural-urban, indigenous-colonial, and communal-capitalist, among others, which he explores through drawing, diagramming, and expanded practices with communities. He is the co-founder of the Lugar Común neighbourhood initiative (2012–present) in Oaxaca, which explores rural community self-organisation and citizen participation in urban life alongside other artists and neighbours. Since 2019, he has led the Education Department at Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City.

This roundtable is conducted as part of Ruíz’s residency at Asia Art Archive. It is part of AAA’s Learning and Participation Programme, generously supported by the S. H. Ho Foundation Limited.
