Asia Art Archive (AAA) and Tai Kwun Contemporary co-present a series of educator programmes that explore the archive as a space for creative enquiry. A talk and workshops designed to equip educators with new ways of seeing contemporary art exhibitions will be held in conjunction with Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys, an exhibition that draws on the extensive personal archive of the late Hong Kong artist Ha Bik Chuen.

Teachers' Morning | Engaging Students in Contemporary Art Exhibitions
Saturday, 22 May 2021, 10am–1:30pm HKT

Contemporary art exhibitions can sometimes appear mystifying—how can educators help students develop meaningful connections with exhibitions and artworks?

Using Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys as a case study, independent curator and art critic Jeff Leung Chin Fung introduces educators to visual thinking methodologies—including an inquiry-based, student-centered facilitation method that promotes inclusive discussions, encourages critical thinking, and fosters collective explorations of exhibitions and artworks. Jeff also demonstrates the idea of an “engaged tour” through use of games, and by drawing on his own docent experiences.

Participants will have an opportunity to apply the methodologies they learned during facilitated tours to exhibitions at Tai Kwun Contemporary: Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys, Ink City, and Trust & Confusion. This event will also include an introduction to the exhibitions by the curators.

Free with registration. If you would like to join, please register here.

Collective Collage: Imagination and Interpretation by Lam Wing Sze (Session 1)

Session 2
Saturday, 5 June 2021, 10am–12:30pm HKT
(includes an exhibition tour for Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys)

*The two sessions are identical

In this workshop, participants will interact with the Ha Bik Chuen Archive, exploring ways to construct meaning and visualise feelings through the composition of visual elements with objects. Images and text from the archive will also be used to develop creative learning and production experience within the archival context.

Lam Wing Sze, a participating artist of Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys, will walk through the process of creating her exhibited work, Thinking Studio. Lam will also guide participants through the artistic practice of making video collages, and will help create a collective collage using mobile phones to capture participants’ perceptions of place—in the process exploring how this practice might benefit students in their creative research.

Free with registration. If you would like to join, please register here.

Lam Wing Sze is a video artist living and working in Hong Kong. She received her BA from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, in 2015. Lam’s image narratives are often composed of scenes and situations she encounters by chance, but also those that she both anticipates and manipulates. For Lam, the camera is an extension of her senses that helps her capture a particular space and time. Her role as an image-maker is to create a situation that gives the audience a viewing experience, open up a conversation with that which was captured, and create new meaning. Lam looks at scenery in the city and inverts daily observations into moving images that depict the perception and reflection of seeing.

Jeff Leung Chin Fung is an independent curator. He teaches theories of visual culture and arts administration at local universities on a part-time basis. He is fond of curating exhibitions about Hong Kong art in diverse formats, including the cultural exhibition Sparkle! Neo Travel: Creative and Cultural Docent@ Community (2017) and K11 Art Mall’s inaugural show Hiking Arte (2009). Jeff is a member of the art critics groups Art Appraisal Club and International Association of Art Critics Hong Kong. He is also a voluntary docent of M+ Museum.

The AAA Learning & Participation programme is supported by the S. H. Ho Foundation Limited and C. K. and Kay Ho Foundation.
