Just in Case is a library display that highlights a selection of new arrivals in AAA’s Library Collections by artists, artist collectives, and art practitioners.

The project invites six of these artists—amongst them Sin Wai Kin, Michael Leung, and otto—to develop a display idea in collaboration with AAA.

Just in Case unfolds in two chapters, each featuring three displays by three artists or artist collectives. Each display showcases a publication along with related materials such as sketches, notes, props, and memorabilia, and with reflections upon the work and the artistic processes behind independent publications.

The focus on Hong Kong–based artists, artist collectives, and art practitioners enquires into the histories of Hong Kong art, offering insights into the relationship between artists, art initiatives, and self-publishing, and the methods that artists use to illustrate and explore micronarratives in the city.

Chapter 1 (6 December 2021–25 January 2022)

Dream Babes by Sin Wai Kin (ZIN.SIV2)

The first and second volumes of Dream Babes explore science and speculative fiction as a strategy of queer resistance that breaks from a reliance on existing historical and social infrastructure. Edited by Sin Wai Kin, Dream Babes 2.0 features contributions from Sophia Al-Maria, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Angela Chan and Xia Jia, Orion J Facey, Wong Bing Hao, Tokini Irene Fubara Manuel, Imani Robinson, Ashkan Sepahvand, Daniella Valz Gen, Sin Wai Kin (f.k.a., Victoria Sin), and Samuel R Delany.

Sin Wai Kin (f.k.a., Victoria Sin, b. 1991, Toronto, CA) is an artist using speculative fiction in performance, moving image, writing, and print works to interrupt normative processes of desire, identification, and objectification. Drawing from close personal encounters of looking and wanting, their work presents heavily constructed fantasy narratives about the often unsettling experience of the physical within the social body.

Land 2016 – 2021 by Michael Leung (ZIN.LCK2)

The box set Land 2016 – 2021 by Michael Leung gathers books, zines, posters, and leaflets that Leung created and co-authored with several collaborators. Partially printed in AAA Library, the materials explore the relationship between Hong Kong, land, climate action, and environmental justice through discussion and collective storytelling.

Michael Leung is an artist/designer, researcher, and fiction writer. His research takes him to different autonomous spaces—some of which he shares with students, in zines, and with(in) different social movements.

otto by otto (Tiffany Tam TT and Wong Mei Yin) (ZIN.OTT)

Zines created by otto are filled with drawings and limited text, and centred on one theme per issue. The first five issues of otto focuses on shared observations surrounding the themes of “Summer,” “Lover(s),” “Trees,” “Black,” and “OK.” The newest issue will be published in December 2021.

otto was founded in 2017 by Tiffany Tam TT and Wong Mei Yin in Hong Kong, and publishes prints and independent zines. otto aims to encourage reading, observing, and sharing together.

Tiffany Tam TT was born in Hong Kong, and graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. She previously had a day job as a designer for an art magazine, and now focuses on creating prints, zines, and illustrations, in which she re-interprets the people and objects that she comes into contact with in the city.

Wong Mei Yin (Hazel) was born and raised in Hong Kong, and graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her works primarily include paintings and independent publications, exploring her personal sentiments living in a modern metropolis. She seeks out ordinary but unforgettable moments in life and narrates them as stories or sequences of events.
