The 2019 Teaching Labs series, part of AAA’s teacher professional development programme, focuses on performance art.

Performance art is a unique way of expression that has been integral to the development of contemporary art. It adopts a non-traditional and de-materialised approach to investigating the relationship of art with individuals and society. However, for many teachers and students, performance art often appears mystifying, and the topic impossible to teach. How do we approach and appreciate performance art? While visual arts teachers are familiar with methods of analysing artforms such as paintings and sculptures, how can these be extended to performance art? What sort of criteria might we formulate to critique and evaluate it? 

Artist and art critic Anthony Leung Po Shan will explore these questions with participants through this workshop. Using actual field studies, documentations from AAA’s Collection, as well as artworks, the workshop will discuss ways to appreciate performance art, and offers an introduction to basic aesthetic theories. The workshop aims to increase teachers’ confidence in teaching contemporary art, and also suggests ways for improving student guidance.

About Anthony Leung Po Shan
PhD, MPhil (CUHK); MA (Leeds) | Artist of the year, Art Development Award 2018

Leung studied Fine Arts and Cultural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Leeds University. She was a member of Para Site Art Space, InMedia (Hong Kong), and Hong Kong Culture Monitor. Her research interests include art ecology, city space, cultural politics, and art labour. Her essays and commentaries have been published in the Hong Kong Economic Journal, InMedia, City Magazine, and Ocula, among others. She is also a contributor to various Chinese media platforms including Leap, Art Newspaper (Chinese edition), Artouch, and Initium. She has edited publications including Modern Art in a Colony: Narrated by Hon Chi-fan at the Millennium, Odd One In: Hong Kong Diary (by Pak Sheung Chuen), QK – Specimen Collection of Chan Yuk Keung, and The Red Twenty Years of Ricky Yeung Sau-churk. Her latest title, I Love Art Basel: On Art and Capital, was well received in Hong Kong and Taiwan. She is currently a member of the art critic collective Art Appraisal Club.
