Join us for a performance by artist Movana Chen and dancer Francisco Borges in response to idea of stillness through sculpture and landscape, organised as part of “mould the wing to match the photograph,” currently on view at AAA’s library.

How does sculpture respond to changing landscapes? In what ways can audiences connect with a performative sculpture through stillness? In this performance, Movana Chen wears a double-container sculpture knitted from maps, and in collaboration with dancer Francisco Borges, activates it through movement and stillness. The performance will explore AAA’s library as a landscape, which expands on Chen’s practice using books as knitting material to create sculptures.

This event is part of “mould the wing to match the photograph, currently on view at AAA’s library. The exhibition draws on the archive of Mrinalini Mukherjee, one of the most prominent sculptors in India, known for her experimentation with form and materiality over her forty-year practice.

This event is free and open to the public.

Movana Chen is an artist based in Hong Kong and Lisbon. She has been weaving people’s stories through KNITerature since 2004—a genre that involves the deconstruction and reconstruction of meanings and content through knitting books, maps, and dictionaries. Chen’s multidisciplinary practice is rooted in the exploration of communication across cultures, where she shreds and repurposes dictionaries, maps, and books from different languages to create sculptural installations that represent new forms of language. Her upcoming exhibitions include Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai (2023); Knitting Conversations, M+ Museum, Hong Kong (2024), and Words of Heartbeats, Flowers Gallery, Hong Kong (2024). Chen studied Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion, UK, and Fine Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Hong Kong.

Francisco Borges is a contact improvisation practitioner, ecosomatic artist, performer, moving philosopher, poet, musician, and mindfulness meditation teacher based in Lisbon. He was born in the Azores Islands in Portugal, small bits of land surrounded by the great Atlantic. The Ocean (Nature) has always been his temple; music and dance his form of workshop, a way of being immersed in the present moment, from where living art speaks through the body.
