Asia Art Archive (AAA) presents an online talk on teaching and learning art in China, and a workshop designed for educators interested in exploring the possibilities in art education. This event is part of the Teaching Labs series, AAA’s teacher professional development programme.
Talk | Art Education in China Since 1949

This talk is held in conjunction with Learning What Can’t Be Taught, an exhibition about art education in China from the 1950s to the 2000s, featuring case studies of three generations of artists from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou (previously known as the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts). The exhibition focuses on the experience of these artists and how they influenced the next generation with a spirit of experimentation, encouraging them to creatively explore different artistic expressions.
The talk will be led by Anthony Yung, AAA Researcher and co-curator of the exhibition. Yung will give an introduction to the development of tertiary art education in China through the decades, its changing sociopolitical contexts, and how art teachers and students in China have promoted artistic innovation and freedom under the specific limits of different eras.

Workshop for Educators | Choice • Question

In this workshop, artist Cheng Yee Man, also known as Gum, will help teachers consolidate what they learned from the talk “Art Education in China Since 1949,” and discuss its contents within the context of Hong Kong. Gum will discuss major changes in the Hong Kong education system over the past twenty years, drawing on his experience of being a student and then an art educator to investigate the relationship between art and a critical mind.
Responding to the challenges local educators are currently facing, Gum will also carry out hands-on activities with teachers, and explore the role of art in education today.
The workshop, offered exclusively to teachers, is a continuation of the talk. Attending the talk is compulsory for teachers who wish to participate in the workshop.

Cheng Yee Man (Gum) was born in Hong Kong. In 1998, Gum completed the social work programme at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He graduated with a BA (Fine Art) in Drawing from the RMIT University in 2002. He also holds an MA in Comparative and Public History from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Cheung is a registered social worker and a part-time lecturer of HK Art School. He co-founded the art spaces C&G Artpartment and Wooferten. He is chairman of the Hong Kong non-profit art group Project 226, as well as the charity organisation Art Together Limited. He was previously a member of the School Management Committee of a secondary school.
Since 2000, he has curated more than a hundred art exhibitions, educational programmes, seminars, and exchange programmes. His curatorial work covers politics, social issues, and the art ecosystem. His artworks span different media, including painting, drawing, performance, stop-motion animation, photography, video, and installation.
