Asia Art Archive (AAA)’s 2021 Annual Fundraiser offers an auction of forth-eight works, generously donated by artists, individual donors, institutions and galleries across the globe. The fundraiser is an essential source of funding for AAA, an independent non-profit. All proceeds will go directly towards building collections on the history of contemporary art in Asia, as well as towards keeping the materials free and accessible for research and education. The fundraiser supports the work of AAA to contribute to a more generous art history.
AAA takes this opportunity to welcome our new Executive Director, Christopher K. Ho, and to celebrate AAA’s Co-founder and Executive Director for the past twenty years, Claire Hsu, as she transitions to her new position as AAA Board Co-chair.
Continuing our long-standing partnership with Christie’s, a preview of the artworks will be exhibited at Christie’s Hong Kong from 20–23 October, with a live auction taking place on 29 October. Online bidding of the artworks will be available at www.aaa2021auction.com from 12–29 October.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, AAA has played a pivotal role in enabling the history of modern and contemporary art from Asia to be studied, written, and shared globally for more than two decades. Recently, on its twentieth-anniversary, AAA launched the Oscar Ho Hing Kay Archive. The archive provides a tantalising glimpse into a multifarious career, and into art education and cultural policy in Hong Kong from the 1980s to the present.
AAA will continue to illuminate Hong Kong‘s art ecology next year with the launch of Ellen Pau’s personal archive. In addition to being known as an artist and curator, Pau spearheaded Hong Kong’s new media and video art scene, notably as co-founder of Videotage and the Microwave Festival.
Other new collections launching in 2021–22 include the archives of the late pioneering Indian artist Mrinalini Mukherjee, and Chinese researcher and art critic Tao Yongbai. AAA has been working closely with the Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation on the digitisation of collection materials amid several lockdowns in India. We look forward to sharing Mukherjee’s inspiring and personal journey through the documentations of distinctive and sensual sculptures of textile, clay, and bronze.
AAA’s public programmes continue to pay tribute to artist-teachers, schools, and independent art collectives who have shaped contemporary practice in the region. Among them is the upcoming collaboration with Gudksul, a public learning space established by three Jakarta-based art collectives: Grafis Huru Hara, ruangrupa, and Serrum.
AAA’s 2021 Annual Fundraiser is supported by Altaya Group, Christie’s Hong Kong, Chubb, Corney & Barrow Hong Kong, SALONI, Willis Towers Watson, and media partners, the Artling, ArtReview, CoBo Social, Design Anthology, Tatler Hong Kong, and Ocula.
