A History of Exhibitions: Shanghai 1979–2006 上海展覽史:1979-2006
This archive includes documentation of 37 exhibitions and interviews with 23 artists who have been active in Shanghai, building a rare chronicle of art practices in Shanghai. The collection stems from Shanghai-based curator Biljana Ciric's research for her exhibition 'History in the Making: Shanghai 1979–2009' (2009).
'A History of Exhibitions: Shanghai 1979–2006' traces the practice of exhibition-making in Shanghai from 1979 to 2006, with a specific focus on artist-organised exhibitions. The archive highlights the following key questions: What are the possibilities of exhibition-making as a specific format of display? How has the cultural environment in Shanghai been shaped by practices from different sectors in art (artists, professional curators, critics, media, official and non-official, commercial and non-profit institutions), and how have their roles changed over time?
