'Visual Research into Contemporary Hong Kong' was a project founded by Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1990. Joined by local photographers including Chan Wai Man, Bernard Mok, Ken Wong and Wong Kwok Kay, the first exhibition of this project was held at Hong Kong Art Centres and Quart Society in January 1991.

Ellen Pau and other video artists participated in phase II of this project under the programme 'Research Medium: Video' (details on.p16-18 in the education programme brochure). Two discussions/critiques on each medium (photography and video) were held on 25 and 26 May 1991 for the public to participate.

The programme later led to the exhibitions 'Visual Research into Contemporary Hong Kong Installation Exhibition and Video Screening' and 'Visual Research into Contemporary Hong Kong Photography Exhibition' held in September 1992.
