Black and White Mural (Detail)

Detailed view of the Black and White Mural by K.G. Subramanyan.

The Black and White Mural was executed over the exterior walls of the Design Department Building in Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. The mural was made from white ground and lampblack with Fevicol, and was finished in approximately two months during the winter of 2009.

In the making of this mural, K.G. Subramanyan was primarily assisted by Dilip Mitra, Amit Kumar Danda, Gourab Roy, Arunangshu Bhunia, and Nur Mohammad.

Documentation of the making process of the mural is also available with the online collection of Asia.

Context

The Black and White Mural on the Design Department Building was made on top of another mural that K.G. Subramanyan had made earlier over two phases — 1990 and 1993. The earlier mural, also painted in black and white, was made by mixing lampblack with polymer on distempered white walls.

For more details on the 1990-1993 mural, please refer to the book The Santiniketan Murals that was edited by Jayanta Chakrabarti and published by Seagull Books, Calcutta, in 1995.
