Another Modernity or Contemporaneity? Traditional Chinese Mediums in the Context of Contemporary Art International Symposium Papers

Since the 80s, painting, calligraphy, Chinese characters, print, paper-cutting and ceramic have dominated the Chinese contemporary art world. The art practices are even more popular in recent years in the representations of the topics 'the rise of China' and 'cultural consciousness'. Yet, with the intention to distant the past, art practices and criticisms never diverge from the diatomic discussion of 'traditional vs. modern'. Contemporaneity, being a totally difference concept, represents a fresh cognition and a new perspective of seeing things. The conference entitled 'Another Modernity or Contemporaneity? Traditional Chinese Mediums in the Context of Contemporary Art' provides a platform for scholars, art critics and artists from the United States, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, to start a discussion around the issue. This anthology is a result of the conference.
