Asia Art Archive (AAA) presents a talk contextualising art collectives in Asia as well as a workshop designed for educators, introducing materials in AAA’s Collections relating to collectivity in the arts. A workshop and The Collective School exhibition tour will be available for educators after the talk. This event is part of the 2023 Teaching Labs series, AAA’s teacher professional development programme, focusing on Art Collectives.
Talk | Art between the Individual and the Collective
Sat, 18 Feb 2023
10:30–11:45am HKT
In the last few years, collective forms of artistic practice have come into vogue in the field of contemporary art. The talk will provide some historical background for understanding the emergence of art collectives as a phenomenon and introduce the question of the relationship between the individual and the collective in different contexts across Asia. It will review some examples of groups as they have manifested in the art of the last few decades.
This talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition The Collective School, AAA’s current project that explores artist-driven and collective models of learning. Developed in collaboration with Gudskul, a Jakarta-based collective that runs a grassroots school for other collectives, The Collective School presents Gudskul and a cohort of collectives’ responses to materials from the archives of other collectives found in AAA’s Collections.
The talk is open to the public with registration and will be held at CCG Library, Asia Art Archive.

Workshop for Educators
11:45am–12:30pm HKT
How do artists learn from their peers in a collective? And can collective practices be applied to educational settings?
The workshop promotes a learning community for teachers, building on knowledge from contemporary art to develop new tools for different educational settings. The talk will be summarised into keywords for group discussions, guiding teachers to consider methods of introducing contemporary art to classroom settings. The discussion will be accompanied by materials from AAA’s Collections on art collectives in Asia, including publications and artwork documentation.
An optional tour of the exhibition The Collective School will be conducted from 12:30–1pm.
