It features artwork and other materials drawn from AAA’s Collection, which includes the archives of Kwok Mangho Frog King, Betsy Damon (Keepers of the Waters), and Lee Wen. The related public programmes include events with artist siren eun young jung, performer and activist Maya Krishna Rao, and artist Xing Danwen.

Xing Danwen is one of the earliest artists in China to use photography as an art form to address social issues such as urbanisation, globalisation, identity, and gender. Important also are her photographs documenting the first generation of art provocateurs in the post-1989 era. Art historian Jane DeBevoise joins Xing in a conversation on her photographic work’s relationship to performance art, with a focus on the East Village scene in Beijing and beyond.

All events are free and open to the public.

Venue: Booth P7, Art Basel in Hong Kong, Level 1 Concourse, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai

The exhibition is curated by John Tain, Chương-Đài Võ, and Özge Ersoy, with the support of Susanna Chung, Young One Cheung, and Hazel Kwok. It develops out of the exhibition Out of Turn, organised for the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, 15 to 22 December 2018, by Asia Art Archive and Meenakshi Thirukode, with the kind assistance of Sabih Ahmed.

As part of our series on performance art, we are honoured to welcome Zhang Peili to give the annual artist’s lecture on Thursday, 28 March 2019, 11am to 12:30pm, at AAA. Also, we present Form Colour Action at AAA Library—an exhibition that explores drawing as a site of performance, with a selection of sketchbooks and notebooks by artist Lee Wen.
