Asia Art Archive presents a brand new programme in 2024, Travelling Teaching Labs: Macau. AAA invites teachers to venture outside Hong Kong to explore the local art and culture landscape of different cities. Through cultural and educational exchange, participants will explore contemporary art education and its connection between Hong Kong and other Asian cities, establishing valuable networks and enhancing their confidence to implement contemporary art learning in the classroom. The first stop is our neighbouring city of Macau.
A local art practitioner will lead a guided walk, showcasing the unexpected art spaces and events scattered throughout Macau’s meandering alleys, and retrace the visual art and education development of the city. Visits to exhibition spaces in historical buildings and community art complexes, and exchanges with local art educators offer opportunities to understand the then and now of art and culture education in this city.
In recent years, Macau’s art and cultural landscape has transformed significantly, where the gambling industry is emerging as an important stakeholder in art sponsorship. This development has not only boosted the local art and cultural scene but has also led to the creation of many smaller commercial art platforms. Will this bring about a different kind of fertile ground for artistic growth? We invite participants to pay a visit to these new, developing art spaces, and imagine what Macau’s art scene will look like in the future.
This programme is specially designed for secondary school and pre-service teachers. We welcome visual arts teachers or those interested in cross-disciplinary collaboration with the arts to apply.

On the morning of the event, we will meet at the Hong Kong port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Participants are responsible for their own cross-border bus fare and lunch expenses. Asia Art Archive will arrange transportation within Macau.

Sio Man Lam is a curator, writer, and arts administrator currently based in Macau. Her curatorial vision is shaped by the vibrant cultural scenes and artistic communities of Macau. She has a keen interest in alternative cultural practices, focusing on curating that fosters meaningful dialogue and new connections. Lam served as the curator of the Macau Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019) and was curator at the Public Art Unit of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Currently, she is a contributing member of MyLand Culture, a non-profit art organisation in Macau dedicated to supporting the local art community.
Established in Macau in 2013, MyLand Culture aims to foster a platform for dialogue between contemporary art and the community through independent curation and collaboration. By engaging in interdisciplinary and cross-regional cultural and art projects, MyLand Culture aspires to explore the vibrant cultural spirit of the city.
