' was held from November 1999 to January 2000 at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. While Japanese avant-garde has been usually discussed in relation to the absorption of European avant-garde movements, this exhibition is not bound by this common notion. Rather, it tries to validate its autonomous development by tracing back to the art movements of the Meiji period which has nurtured awareness for the avant-garde in Japan. The exhibition also presents interchanges between Europe and Japan such as Japanese traditional elements in Bauhaus and the influence of Bauhaus on Yōga. The present publication accompanies the exhibition.
