The exhibition, Tracing Taiwan: Contemporary Works on Paper, was curated by Alice Yang and was first shown at the Drawing Center in New York in June 1997, a few months after the death of Yang. It was later presented in several venues throughout the United States and attracted attention of the art community. The guiding concept shaping the exhibition is an attempt to explore Asian cultural traditions, and its similarities, differences and changing relationships with modern culture through the exploration of local Taiwanese cultural and social practices.

The present publication is the catalogue of the expanded version of the original exhibition, held at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1999. Besides artworks, interviews of the artists carried out by Yang as well as related media reports and reviews have also been included.
