Volume I contains interviews conducted by John Clark between 1981 and 1991 with artists or art practitioners in People’s Republic of China and abroad. All interviews were conducted in Mandarin, with some French interpositions in that with Li Shuang.

The transcriptions available were funded by Australian Research Council via the Faculties Research Fund of the Australian National University in 1992.
