To address the challenges teachers face in teaching contemporary art in the classroom—from a lack of resource material to inexperience with the subject matter, AAA launched Teaching Labs in 2012. This year, in an ongoing partnership with schools and teachers, AAA Teaching Labs will focus on contemporary art in a Hong Kong context, enhancing teachers’ knowledge of the field and sharing ways the subject can be introduced in the classroom.

Hong Kong art has a long history that began before the British set foot on this land. Instead of an overarching narrative, this talk series will offer multiple entry points for looking at the intricacy of local art. Speakers will offer various perspectives, attempting to read Hong Kong through its art.

Based on educators’ feedback about their teaching needs, the format of this series of professional development programmes has been enriched, ranging from talks, workshops, tours, and sharing. Furthermore, to strengthen participants’ teaching implementation, workshops will incorporate in-depth peer group discussions that will be moderated and summarised by experienced educators.

Teacher Workshop: Exhibition Critique

Venue

Asia Art Archive, 10/F Hollywood Centre, 233 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan

Facilitator

Oscar Ho, art critic & educator

To enhance students’ appreciation and understanding of contemporary art, teachers often bring students to see exhibitions. Instead of just absorbing what the docent says or reading the wall text, how can we guide students to see and process exhibitions critically? The talk will include techniques for facilitating students’ art appreciation and criticism skills in context.
