This catalogue is produced together with 'Cities of Desire: Vienna - Hong Kong', an interdisciplinary arts exchange project between practitioners and theorists from the visual arts, urban studies and cultural policy between Vienna and Hong Kong. The project took place in Vienna from Sep-Oct 2008 and in Hong Kong from Sep-Oct 2009. It moves to steer the focus away from the current top-down urban regeneration rhetoric, spotlighting place-making theorisation and practices through grassroots initiatives. This publication provides a theoretical guide to these pressing issues with original essays by specialists from cultural studies and policy, visual art, new media and architecture. Artist biographies included.
