Born into a privileged and land-owning family, Shi Lu (1919-1982), wholeheartedly embraced the Communist cause, only to be castigated even before the Cultural Revolution. His works were condemned as ‘crude, weird and undisciplined and black’ as early as 1963. Nowadays, however, he is widely acknowledged as a master and genius of twentieth-century Chinese painting and calligraphy, and the founder of the Chang’an School of Painting. The accompanying essay written by Zhuang Shen offers an in-depth study of Shi Lu’s art from the 1940s to the 1970s. A biography of the artist is included.
