David Elliot wrote in the foreword, 'In Chinese society, mired for centuries in stagnation then developing at breakneck speed, the traditional respect for tolerance, humility and balance that was the backbone of the Middle Kingdom seems to have taken a severe knock. Dynamic change, however, also brings exhilaration in its wake but, as necessary as it may be, this is often tempered by feelings of sadness or regret for the beautiful and good things that have been lost or endangered. Nowhere has the complexity of such feelings been more strongly expressed than in the art of the past five years, in which artists, sometimes humorously and critically, have begun to apprehend and comment on such deep-rooted transformations in their society and culture... The 19 young Chinese artists whose work is shown here present an initial analysis of this dilemma, by searching for permanence and value in a world that is both unstable and unsure of its future. The effects of alienation in the vast future metropolis are recurring themes, as is the impact of terrorism on urban living. The seduction, but also the emptiness, of consumerism must be faced in the process of navigating the powerful forces of globalization.'
With artist biographies, bibliography and a list of related publications. Also featured in the catalogue is MAM Screen, a new video project that showcases works by three young Chinese artists, Xu Zhen, Deng Dafei and Cao fei.
