‘Art for Sale’ was an exhibition/event self-organised by the artists who rented a vacant space in a shopping mall in Shanghai. The event consisted of two parts: first, a supermarket setting in which “products”—such as canned food, toys, soap, and toilet rolls—all designed by the thirty-some participating artists, were sold; the second part was a comparatively formal exhibition, with video, installation, and performance works by the same group of artists.
The controversial works in the exhibition attracted police attention, who arrived on the second day and requested the organisers to send all works to the authority in order to obtain a permit. The exhibition, which should have run from 10 April until 25 April 1999, was closed on the third day.
