Bourgeois Family: Mirror Frieze

This work is from the Re-take of Amrita series.

Excerpt from Vivan Sundaram, Vivan Sundaram: Re-take of Amrita, Tulika Books, New Delhi, 2001:

'Triptych that evolves in the manner of folding screens reveals the figures from right to left. Amrita in European dress is in Budapest in 1938/39. Marie Antoinette in an oriental robe is in Lahore in 1912, four months after her marriage. In the mirror is a painting by George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923), Small Earring, 1893. Indira, looking into the mirror, is in Paris around 1933. In the mirror is Umrao Singh with Vivan Sundaram as a child in 1946. He is holding a Voigtländer twin-lens reflex camera.'
