The book, Contemporary Indian Tradition: Voices on Culture, Nature, and the Challenge of Change by Carla M. Borden (editor), was a result of the Smithsonian International Symposium, The Canvas of Culture: Redisocvery of the Past as Adaptation for the Future. It took place from 21–23 June 1985 at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. This event was held under the auspices of The Festival of India, United States, 1985–86.
