From its inception, the Shanghai Biennale has consistently explored the issue of urban migration, being situated in a city that is home to the largest migrant population in both China and all of Asia. The theme Translocalmotion (Kuai-cheng kuai-ke) refers to the city's floating population and those who are in constant transit: Kuai-ke literally means "fast guest" in Chinese and Kuai-cheng translates to "fast city". The 7th Shanghai Biennale focuses on People's Square, one of the city's most important landmarks and a prime location for transfer, connection, social and economic exchange.

"Our attention to the city's history and culture is a consistent feature of previous biennales...At the center of these themes are people, the essence of urban life and the major forces driving urban changes. How to frame this theme, and how to articulate the concept of the city are the major questions that this year's curatorial team raise." - Xu Jiang, Director of the Academic Committee of the 7th Shanghai Biennale

"The artists' research and works begin from the Biennale's theme. But they move beyond sociological and historical facts by illuminating the contemporary and historical relevance of migration in a highly original manner. In their works, the theme of translocalmotion is deepened, broadened and heightened." - Zhang Qing, Artistic Director of The 7th Shanghai Biennale and Vice-Director of Shanghai Art Museum

An additional insert for the exhibition 'One Century of People's Square: An Historic Retrospect' is attached to the catalogue.
