'The theme of the 25th Bienal de Sao Paulo, Metropolitan Iconography, which embodies the far-reaching proposal of "history of art as the history of cities", has taken on an even more urgent meaning after the New York event. In fact, Iconografias Metropolitanas closely follows the new course of artistic manifestation that holds the city as its ultimate experimental laboratory. In view of this, the Fundacao Bienal de Sao Paulo's role as the organizer of a major international event like Iconografias Metropolitanas assumes an even more serious dimension. This year's Bienal brings 11 large metropolises represented by renowned artists, who address the issues and dramas of their home cities by appropiating them as a means of artistic expression.' - abstract from chapter 'The Metropolis and the New Course of Art' by Carlos Bratke, Chairman of the Fundacao Bienal de Sao Paulo.
