This publication documents the research and exhibition project 'Talkover/Handover' presented by 1a space in Hong Kong in collaboration with Asia Art Archive to mark the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China's sovereignty in 1997.
The aim of the project was to create a platform to facilitate criticism of Hong Kong art and culture in the post-1997 era. The research started with the collating of visual events in Hong Kong that took place during the handover (1996 - 1998) and the collecting of their statistics. Local artists deemed most active in the art scene during that period were invited to participate in the research project. These artists then invited an artist, curator, critic active today to engage in a dialogue/discussion regarding issues relating to 1997. During the discussion, the artists were video-interviewed, and its recording is now archived at Asia Art Archive. In total, twenty three artists participated in the project, amongst which twelve artists were active during the handover. The exhibition consisted of works originated from the earlier dialogues and interactions among the artists. The diversity of works presents each artist's own artistic character and orientation, unique in their medium and subject matter, in response to the handover and the current situation in Hong Kong.
Includes images of each work, artists' biographies, an excerpt from the dialogue/discussion (in Chinese only), news clippings, and three essays by Edwin Lai (in Chinese only), Yeung Yang (with references, in English only) and Selina Ho (with references, in Chinese only) respectively.
