This catalogue is published in conjunction with 'Afterwork', a collaborative exhibition by ILHAM, Kuala Lumpur and and Para Site, Hong Kong. First shown at Para Site in March 2016, the exhibition explores the notion of migration, labour, race, class, and identity. While it takes as its point of departure the specific context of migrant labour in Hong Kong, it unpacks larger contemporary issues of migration within the region. The term 'migrant'/pendatang' carries with it considerable political overtones within the local context of Malaysia. As one of Asia's largest importers of foreign labour, both documented and undocumented, Malaysia's development has been fueled by millions of workers from neighbouring countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and the Philippines, often working in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. 'Afterwork' features a wide variety of works by 34 artists, in mediums such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and video. For this iteration at ILHAM, Malaysian artists have been included to reflect some of the issues related to the complex subject.
