As the official education partner of ART HK 09, AAA presents Backroom Conversations, a series of programmes with some of the leading experts and practitioners in the field. This CD features the audio recording of the two panel discussions conducted on 16 May 2009:
1. Art + Design (2-4pm)
In light of major museum projects in Hong Kong and the region, AAA continues to consider issues raised at last year's conference on the museum. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of exhibitions exploring the crossover of art and design. A discussion on the topic is especially timely as Hong Kong embarks on building M+, a major museum with a mission to focus on visual culture. The panel is asked to look at the ways in which the bridging of art and design are manifesting themselves; whether we need a new vocabulary for an expanding discourse; and how museum strategies are revisited to include these recent developments.
Speakers include Ron Arad, Defne Ayas, Lim Geun-jun, Michael Lin, and Siu King-chung, with art historian and curator Charles Merewether moderating the discussion.
Conducted in English.
2. Participation, Collaboration & the Everyday (4:30-6:15pm)
Artists and curators internationally have been working around these themes for decades. And in many regions of the world, where there isn’t a museum going public nor infrastructure, where the white cube is not definitive, participation, collaboration and the everyday are key in thinking about contemporary art practice and its audience. At the same time, by bringing these projects and activities in to a more formal museum structure, the very nature of the museum is transformed. AAA invites artists and experts to discuss these issues both as alternative and in relation to the museum.
Panelists include Leung Mee-ping, Daravuth Ly, Frances Morris, Hammad Nasar, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, with curator Vasif Kortun moderating the discussion.
Conducted in English.
Note: Video recordings of the events are also in the AAA collection at CDAAA.000271 (Art + Design) and CDAAA.000272 (Participation, Collaboration and the Everyday).
