Chen Shu-ming was born in 1948 in Taiwan. Trained as a painter in Taiwan and Spain, he has been presenting his works on the island and internationally. For this solo exhibition organised in 1996, Chen showed two types of works: pencil drawings on paper and comprised paintings or cubic shaping with white canvas as the base colour.
In the catalogue essay, art critic Huang Hai-ming divides those pencil drawings into two types: 'isolated' pictures and a super 'continuous' long work comprised of many 'isolated' pictures, the length of which is 9.5 metres. He describes the second genre of Chen's work, made with multi-materials as 'a painting within a painting'. It has a cubic white canvas on a white painting; on the cubic white canvas, we could find a white hole. In comparison with the artist's previous solo exhibition in 1992, which was more filled with 'grandeur, ascension, and spurt', Huang describes the keynotes of the works of this exhibition as 'spirituality, coolness, and generosity'.
At the end of catalogue, a brief biography of the artist is provided in both Chinese and English.
