"Francis Yu's new works combine images and characters of western and Chinese origins. The central figure, or in this case, the 'body' is executed in western academic style and juxtaposed with Chinese characters. These characters have contextual relationship with the central theme of the work with many related to the titles. The interplay between the characters' intonation and connotation provokes new interpretations of the image. Francis Yu's figures are not the most important component in his painting; in fact, they are only superficial 'forms' that the artist uses to relate to his text. Yu's 'body' is a formal layering for which textual references could be made in order to address a deeper, more personal, message. The true meaning of the figure, therefore, is only found in the collective understanding of the work: its title, characters, form and colors." (From the catalogue)
