The art of Fung Ming-chip is tied closely to the written word. In the calligraphic pieces presented in this exhibition catalogue, he shows how a text may be ‘written’ and ‘read’ through unconventional representations. In the words of Chang Tsong-zung, ‘Without abandoning given rules, Fung exaggerates the movements and bends the order of calligraphic writing, often playing upon the absorbent quality of Chinese paper to achieve a result that makes the reader conscious of its rhythm and tempo in a fresh way. The new look of his calligraphy appears as a result of restructuring the process of writing, excavating a logic more fundamental than dictated by pictorial design.’ This is the catalogue for Fung’s solo exhibition at Hanart TZ Gallery (Hong Kong) in 1998. Biographical information of the artist is included.
