The exhibition is a retrospect of Shu Qun, one of the leading artists in the 85 New Wave Movement and an advocate of the 'Rational Painting'. The exhibition shows nearly 50 works of the artist and is comprised of three sections: 'Absolute Principles (1983-1989)', 'Out of the Sublime (1990-2004)' and 'The Symbolic Order (2005-2009)'. The historical path of Shu Qun's art reflects both his personal development over the years as well as the history of contemporary art thinking in China since the 1980s. This exhibition together with the monograph explore Shu Qun's art and the philosophical thoughts behind. As the curator, Zhuan Huang, mentioned at the end of his Foreword, the art of Shu Qun brings up a reflective question ' Does contemporary Chinese art still need metaphysics?'
