The Sixth Annual Contemporary Chinese Art Awards (CCAA) Exhibition catalogue consists of two volumes. The present volume is written by Pauline J. Yao, recipient of the new CCAA award for independent art criticism.

'Attempting to research the social and collective dimension of art production under conditions so single-mindedly focused upon the contingencies of the market has not been an easy task. There remains in the Chinese art world a general indifference towards matters of production and the processes that accompany art making, and the widening presence of assistants, workers and artisans who take part in producing work has consistently received scant attention locally and internationally. This book attempts to address this lack. It is not a survey of projects that illustrate issues of production, nor is it a detailed analysis of facts and figures. Rather it is an attempt to situate the current 'productive phenomenon' within China at this particular moment in time.' - Pauline J. Yao
