'The exhibition catalogue, Indian Popular Culture: 'The Conquest of the World as Picture' offers a critical viewing of the role played by popular Indian imagery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the construction of cultural, social and national identities. It shows how the eclecticism of visuality resulting from a strategic piling up of images from diverse visual sources on one picture plane facilitated the seizure of aesthetic and cultural meaning.' - from the back cover

The first edition was published to coincide with the above-mentioned exhibition held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Mumbai, in October 2004.
