This publication collects 27 essays written by the author over a period of more than a decade on Taiwanese documentary, which has had a long tradition in Taiwan's society and culture.
The author firstly brings to the fore a very important problematic of Taiwanese documentary: the lack of political exploration and critique of social problems and public phenomena, despite its seeming popularity in visual culture. These documentaries are often highly sentimentalised and veiling the truth instead of reporting it, a responsibility inherited in the form of the documentary itself.
Combining theoretical insights contextualised for the Taiwanese discourse with case analyses, the author calls for a renewed perspective to understand the political possibility of both producing and viewing these moving images. Instead of continuously investing the psychic energy brought by the visual form (which will but only worsen the structural problems eminent in contemporary capitalist society), he envisages the documentary as a medium for which to inquire into reality, ask political question and thus awaken the political consciousness of the viewer.
