Booklet published in conjunction with Marysia Lewandowska's It's About Time, a special project curated by Ralph Rugoff for the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, and realised by La Biennale di Venezia with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
'It's About Time explores the ways in which the archival traces can serve as a means of identifying and unraveling historical narratives built on the absence of women. The project focuses on the public Verbale records of meetings held by the Mayor of Venice Riccardo Selvatico in 1893, which led to the creation of La Biennale two years later. This publication presents a parallel Verbale text generated through a collective endeavor offering an augmented history of the event written by women. The spirit in which the project has been conceived acknowledges the importance of Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa (1822-1899) and her critical position regarding the establishment of the international exhibition in 1895. If we understand the function of archives as sites of contestation, we must accept the challenge they pose to the accepted version of our shared history.' —excerpted from introduction by Marysia Lewandowska
