Holland Cotter enthusiastically reviews two films by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba at the New Museum, on view through June 29, 2003. Memorial Project, Nha Trang, Vietnam, 'Towards the Complex -- For the Courageous, the Curious and the Cowards' (2001) shows men pedaling cyclos over the rocky ocean floor. Happy New Year-- Memorial Project Vietnam II (2003), based on the Tet offensive of 1968, is another underwater film that show balloons filled with paint rising and then bursting into clouds of color before they arrive at the surface. The social and political tensions of Vietnam are fleshed out with "a conceptual subtlety and imaginative flair."
