Kick the Gallery

Excerpt from Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2012, The Macao Museum of Art, Macau S.A.R., 2012, p. 28: 'This work employs other people's bodies as a resource, using resistance in the form of a simple violation and meaningless personal outbursts to transform the whole performance into one that restrains oneself in a formatted time limit. Invited performers use their bodies to step into the construction in this way, thereby adding a new collective myth to the story of public architecture. Traces of remains on the wall represent the place where the performance was undertaken, whilst performers who are not at the scene can relive this 'fight' from the very beginning through videos. All these are duplicates of the delusion of Sisyphus, who lives in the present moment as well as the 'powerless power' of the grassroots.'

The performance took place at the New Millennium Centre for Contemporary Art, Hunan, China, September 2009.
