The Art of Mu Xin features two extraordinary series created while the artist was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution and its immediate aftermath. The Landscape Paintings, a unique synthesis of Western Renaissance and classical Chinese painting styles, evoke imaginary and real sites drawn from the tradition of Chinese landscape in both painting and poetry. The Prison Notes, which Mu Xin wrote on sheets of paper provided by his captors for enforced self-criticism while in solitary confinement, express musings on art and philosophy - visual testimony to the perservance of high humanistic ideals in the face of total adversity.
