This publication is issued on the occasion of the exhibition 'Li Chen: Mind·Body·Spirit' at the Singapore Art Museum, 17 September – 9 December 2009, and the Round Table Discussion with International Curators held in conjunction entitled, 'On the Spiritual in Art: Is There a Place for the Transcendental in Contemporary Sculpture?'

Li Chen's large-scale bronzes fuse Chan (Zen) thought with contemporary art practice. He began his largely self-taught career by producing traditional Buddhist sculptures, but later freed himself from the restraints of the traditional canon while retaining a profound spirituality in his work. 'Li Chen: Mind·Body·Spirit' is the artist's first outdoor exhibition in Asia. 21 works (25 sculptures) from four series are installed within the arts and heritage district of Singapore: The Beauty of Emptiness (1992–1997), Energy of Emptiness (1998–2000), Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether (2001–present) and Soul Guardians (2008–present).

This volume is comprised of papers presented at the aforementioned round table discussion and numerous installation views of Li Chen's artworks. Artist biography included.
