‘Juan I Jong’s photographic journey into the rural life of Taiwan is an intimate investigation in the relationship between man and his land, and the various facets of life on that piece of land. In Juan’s photographs, the land is not a pastoral Arcadia for enjoyment, but a harsh, sometimes overwhelming field for exhausting labour. There is no superficial glorification of the ‘beauty’ of farming, or sentimental pity-ness toward the raggedness of rural life. Instead the photographs are full of intensive living experiences ― youthful exuberance, humour, contemplation, exhaustion and loneliness are all juxtaposed within the cycle of life and death.’ ― Oscar Ho. This is the catalogue for Juan’s solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Art Centre in 1988.
