From the abstract, Minna Valjakka's academic dissertation explores the use of Mao Zedong's visual image in contemporary Chinese art during the years 1976-2006. Its main focus is to 'elucidate how Mao's visual image, deriving from the Maoist era, is circulated, modified, re-created, negotiated and questioned in contemporary Chinese artworks' and to examine the complex and continuous interaction between the visual and mental images of Mao.
