'Affandi (1907-1989) is widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in Indonesian art. In particular he is considered a founding father of the Indonesian Modern Art Movement together with his friends and contemporaries Sudjojono and Hendra Gunawan. Affandi's painting style, with its strong and distinctive characters, forged a special landmark in Indonesian creative discourse.' - M.Dwi Marianto.
The present catalogue was published in conjunction with Affandi's exhibition at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 1999. The exhibits presented here as well as information on Affandi's life and works were on loan from and provided by Museum Affandi, Indonesia.
