In China, the written word always has a dimension beyond meaning it carried. The physical presence of the word is accorded the same level of significance as that of an object because the power of word is considered comparable to those of people. The respect for the significance of words is especially evident in the art of painting, in which text has always maintained equal status as representational images.

This is the leaflet of a thematic exhibition, opening discussion of the written word with regard to its function as a pronouncement of power, and investigating its relation to Chinese visual culture in general. An introduction and a program rundown are included in the leaflet.
