This monograph was published to portray the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, who lived from 1848 to 1906 in India. It is written in the context of colonial India, and how this intersects with Varma's career as an aristocratic painter.

Varma was a pioneer in Indian painting that encompassed Indian mythological paintings utillising Western painting techniques of portraiture.

This monograph incorporates works that have not been seen prior to this publication, and also maps, letters, photographs and other archival material. Many artworks shown are those of portraits, one of Varma's specialties, depicted on both oil on canvas and watercolour on paper.
