This book presents a controversial visual record of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–76) by Li Zhensheng, a Heilongjiang Daily photojournalist who had been granted unusual access to capture events during the period. The images in this book are produced from thousands of negatives that Li kept hidden for nearly 40 years, now forming the only known surviving collection of photographs that document the entire period.

Captions accompany each of the images, which are presented in chronological order to depict the historical process. With an introduction by Jonathan D. Spence, Yale University professor and pre-eminent scholar of Chinese history; and a personal account of the period by Li Zhensheng as told to Jacques Menasche. Chronology and index provided.
