Li Tiefu was not only an artist, but also simultaneously a revolutionary and a poet. He was one of the first Chinese artists to go overseas to study oil painting, and remains until the present day to be one of the most fascinating characters in the history of Hong Kong and Chinese art. Existing works by Li Tiefu are rare. The exhibits in the present catalogue were on loan from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in which most of Li's works were stored and occasionally brought to public view in provincial exhibitions. The accompanying essays study the art and life of Li Tiefu, introducing the readers to the relationship between his paintings and Western art, and the style and techniques of his works in the course of his artistic development. A biography of Li Tiefu and a section on Li's poems and proses (in Chinese) are also included in the present catalogue.
